The SNAP Gap is the difference between the number of Massachusetts residents receiving MassHealth who are eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the number of people actually receiving SNAP benefits. In Massachusetts, the size of this gap is over 700,000 residents. Click here to see what the SNAP Gap looks like in your community.
For many years the State has administered these food and health programs separately. This means the application process and collection of documents are duplicated by MassHealth and SNAP. This creates more work for the state and for low-income households. Most states implement a single eligibility system. It's time to close the SNAP Gap in Massachusetts!

A common application would increase access for SNAP-eligible individuals and families by allowing low-income households to apply for MassHealth, SNAP, and other income based benefits including income eligible child care, housing, veterans' services, fuel assistance and more.
This manageable and cost-saving technological advancement would solve hunger for children, seniors, working families, veterans and disabled individuals across the Commonwealth.
It would leverage an estimated $841 million in federal SNAP benefits annually that would stimulate the Massachusetts economy, generating an additional $1.5 billion in annual economic activity.
Enable more low income children to be "directly certified" for free school meals through SNAP.
